Material Boy provides an overview of my textile based work. The pieces are made from various types of fabric including second-hand clothing and bedlinens as well as seconds and deadstock from the fashion industry.
Working across a range of techniques from English paper piecing patchwork to assemblage and installation the exhibition embraces the aesthetic and theoretical concerns that I have engaged with for almost twenty years. The recent large works featuring hand embroidered and sequined figures on transparent organza belong to a long-term and on-going project inspired by the life and work of Swedish artist Eugène Jansson (1862 –1915), while Tender and Buddies refer to particular events in my personal life.
I have long been fascinated by the role of art in society. My aim is always that the exhibition space becomes a meeting place where visitors are invited to ponder, reflect, ask questions, and engage in a dialogue with the artworks. The exhibition opens at 13:00 on Saturday 7 November when there will be a welcome and brief presentation of the exhibition.
